Firearm Safety 101

Published: March 26, 2025

Firearm safety is a fundamental responsibility for all gun owners. Understanding and following basic gun safety rules can prevent accidents and ensure responsible firearm handling.

1. Treat Every Firearm as if It's Loaded

Even if you believe a firearm is empty, always handle it with caution. This mindset ensures proper respect for the weapon and reduces the risk of negligent discharge.

2. Keep Your Finger Off the Trigger

Never place your finger on the trigger unless you are ready to fire. This rule prevents accidental discharges, which can happen if your finger slips or if you are startled.

3. Store Firearms Securely

Use a gun safe or a secure locking mechanism to prevent unauthorized access. Always store ammunition separately to enhance safety.

4. Be Aware of Your Target and Beyond

Always know what is in front of and behind your target before pulling the trigger. Bullets can travel long distances and penetrate unintended objects.
